Thirteen years ago, Don Dumaual's life took an unexpected turn. At the time, he was juggling his biology studies at Cal Poly Pomona, working at In-N-Out Burger and teaching Tae Kwon Do. His life was full but changed when a friend stumbled upon a job opening that seemed tailor-made for Don—a lab technician position at the American Red Cross Betty Bazar Blood Services Center in Pomona, the nation’s highest producing blood processing facility.
Hired as a supervisor, Don brought with him a sense of discipline and respect for himself and others, values gained from his martial arts training. This foundation continues to prove valuable in Don’s current role, overseeing the team who initiates the first blood production steps when donations arrive at the center.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Don gained a deeper realization as to the importance of the work he and his colleagues produced; while businesses everywhere shuttered, Don and his Red Cross lab professionals continued their vital operations. This awareness sunk in even further, when it was discovered that plasma had an impact on COVID recovery, making it one of the first treatments available against the virus. COVID relief was literally coming through Don’s door. Under his watchful eye, plasma was processed from donated blood, then made its way to COVID patients.
Don leads one of the teams responsible for processing all blood donations from across California and most of Arizona. The team’s important work transforms each pint of blood into life-saving products, ensuring patient needs are met.
Despite his leadership role, Don remains grounded, working alongside his team and emphasizing the importance of recognizing their efforts. For him, it's not just about efficiency—it's about fostering a positive work culture where every individual feels valued.
"I can't forget why I'm doing this work," Don reflects. "It's not about me; it's about the people we're helping. It's bigger than me." And with that mindset, Don continues to make a difference, one blood donation at a time.
