In honor of Black History Month, we highlight Lena Ethington, the Regional Response and Recovery Specialist at the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region. Lena's work as a compassionate caseworker assisting individuals affected by disasters is both impactful and inspiring.
Black History Month holds special significance for Lena, serving as a source of pride and motivation. She finds inspiration in celebrating Black culture, which drives her to work harder and make a positive difference in her community.
"It really inspires me to see Black History Month celebrated here at the Red Cross," Lena shared. "It makes me very proud of what I can do and who I am. It's so nice to see other people looking at and appreciating Black culture. It makes me want to work harder for the cause."
As a Woman of Color, Lena brings unique perspectives and experiences to her role. Her background has cultivated empathy and understanding, allowing her to connect with individuals on a deeper level during times of crisis.
Lena advocates for diversity and inclusion within the Red Cross, emphasizing the benefits of embracing different communities. She encourages raising awareness through donations, volunteering, and community engagement to foster a more inclusive environment.
"I believe we are doing a great job at the Red Cross in promoting diversity. Spreading the word and sharing our interests can make a difference," said Lena. "It doesn't have to be time-consuming, whether through donations or volunteering. This is my way of helping when unfortunate events happen to good people."
When an apartment building fire displaced over two dozen people from their homes, Lena and fellow caseworkers worked together to support, inform and assist those affected.
With a focus on general casework and response efforts, Lena aims to help further support African American communities in the future. Her commitment to addressing the specific needs of diverse populations reflects her dedication to serving with compassion and empathy.
“It’s important to give back to the foundation you had," Lena said, "I believe you should look forward so that you don't have to look back with regret.”
Lena's unwavering support for clients and dedication to cultural sensitivity demonstrate her ability to create a sense of connection and understanding in disaster response and recovery efforts. Her empowering impact within Black communities exemplifies the spirit of giving back and humanitarian work that she advocates for during Black History Month.
