When massive wildfires destroyed more than 16,000 structures in Los Angeles, hundreds of Red Cross volunteers deployed from around the country to provide food, shelter, emotional support, recovery planning and financial assistance to those affected. Among these responders were 32 volunteers from Mastercard, the first company to establish a disaster relief training program with the Red Cross.
Since 2019, Mastercard has been a critical partner in our disaster response—leveraging its network to support public donations and training more than 600 employees to deploy to disasters, including the recent LA fires, as well as crises in Florida, Texas and Kentucky. Following the wildfires, Mastercard volunteers stepped up in various capacities, from assisting displaced residents in shelters to distributing emergency supplies in impacted areas.
“Our disaster relief training program with the Red Cross has become one of our signature volunteer initiatives,” says Susan Warner, Vice President of Community Impact at Mastercard. “When we deploy, it is a true honor to stand side by side with Red Cross staff and volunteers to make a difference for those in need.”
In response to the disaster that began January 7, the Red Cross has distributed more than 195,000 relief supplies—including coveralls, masks, gloves, cleanup kits, tarps, snacks and water. Additionally, with the support of its partners, the Red Cross has provided more than 18,000 overnight stays and served over 156,000 meals and snacks.
