In April 2024, Senior Airman Carlos Gomez sat down for an interview with the American Red Cross as part of the Veterans History Project (VHP), sharing the story of his service in the Air Force Honor Guard—the defining chapter of his military career. Conducted by Red Cross volunteer and VHP Director Mike Farrar, the interview sought to illuminate the importance of personal narratives in military service and preserve the legacies of veterans like Gomez.
As a member of the Honor Guard, Gomez took part in over 200 solemn ceremonies as a pallbearer, honoring the sacrifices of fallen heroes. The emotional weight of these responsibilities was immense, yet he navigated each ceremony with unyielding composure, respect and professionalism, embodying the core values of the Air Force.
Growing up in Long Beach, California, Gomez's aspiration to serve was deeply rooted in the influence of his family and community. After enlisting in 2015, he embarked on a rigorous journey, starting with basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Those early days were marked by the trials of being away from home for the first time, where the physical demands of boot camp tested the mettle of many recruits. Yet, Gomez rose to each challenge, ultimately graduating and earning a coveted position in the Honor Guard.
Throughout his military career, Gomez ascended to the rank of Senior Airman (E-4), garnering numerous accolades, including the Air Force Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and National Defense Service Medal.
Following his honorable discharge 2022, Gomez faced the complexities of transitioning to civilian life. This adjustment was met with tough days, but he stayed connected with military friends and sought support from organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. His time in the Air Force imparted invaluable lessons in teamwork, respect for tradition and resilience.
Gomez also recognized the essential role of the Red Cross during his military tenure, which provided crucial resources and helped him maintain ties with his family. For over 135 years, the Red Cross has been dedicated to supporting military personnel and their families, ensuring they have the assistance they need during and after their service.
