There are over 15 active fires throughout the state of California with the newest one – the Getty Fire – igniting in Los Angeles County near the neighborhood of Sherman Oaks and threatening approximately 10,000 structures. In Southern California, the Tick Fire continues to burn more than 4,600 acres in Los Angeles County and stands at 70% containment.
Along with government and community partners, dozens of American Red Cross disaster workers are supporting the opening of shelters and evacuation centers and provision of food and comfort for those fleeing the fires. Throughout the weekend, thousands of residents needed shelter after being evacuated due to the wildfires, and more than 3,000 people spent Sunday night in Red Cross and community shelters across California. Along with food and shelter, the Red Cross is supporting those affected with relief supplies, health services such as replacing lost medications and eyeglasses, emotional support and spiritual care.
