New CEO joins region in July 2022
SAN FRANCISCO, July 11, 2022 — The American Red Cross is proud to announce the appointment of Hanna Malak as the new Regional Chief Executive Officer of the organization's Northern California Coastal Region. In this new role, Malak will also serve as the Executive Director for the Bay Area Chapter, one of five chapters in the region he now leads.
Malak, who took the helm on July 11, oversees an operation that includes over 6,500 volunteers and 63 employees. This combined workforce responds to more than 1,000 local disasters each year; educates residents on home fire safety and emergency preparedness; deploys to disasters outside the region; supports the annual collection of approximately 100,000 units of blood at more than 4,000 local blood drives; teaches lifesaving skills to thousands of individuals and companies; delivers aid to international Red Cross partners and those affected by emergencies across the globe; and provides support to military members, veterans, and their families.
“I could not be happier to have my Red Cross journey come full circle – back to the region where it began,” said Malak. “This region is unique in so many ways, made even more so by the diverse cadre of Red Crossers, donors and partners that make our work possible in communities in the Bay Area and across Northern California. I am very honored to be back and in this exciting new role, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together.”
A San Mateo native, Malak comes to the position with extensive Red Cross experience, having worked for the organization for more than 10 years. Starting his Red Cross journey in 2009 as a participant in the Red Cross Collegiate Leadership Program, he has served the Red Cross mission through a number of key leadership roles across California, Oregon and New York in the decade since.
Most recently, he served as the Regional Donor Services Executive for the Red Cross Western New York Region, where he oversaw the development and execution of the region’s operational plan for expansion of efficient blood collections, improvements in quality and safety, and increasing blood donor and sponsor satisfaction. “We are delighted to welcome Hanna back to the Bay Area,” said John Graetz, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Red Cross Bay Area Chapter. “Hanna brings with him a wealth of Red Cross experience from around the country and across multiple lines of service. That’s an asset that will not only serve him well, but also serve the region well, including its most vulnerable communities. We are very fortunate to have him here.”
The Northern California Coastal Region serves more than 10 million people throughout 15 counties. The Bay Area Chapter serves Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties; the North Bay Chapter serves Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties; the Silicon Valley Chapter serves Santa Clara County; the Heart of the Valley Chapter serves Merced, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties; and the Central Coast Chapter serves Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties.
