Red Cross hosts 5th annual holiday drive, donors needed
LOUISVILLE, KY, June 24, 2024 — This summer is bringing exciting spikes in travel and family outings. Unfortunately, the American Red Cross continues to address a concerning shortfall in lifesaving donations since late spring. Blood and platelet donors are critically needed now. Join us for the 5th annual Stars and Stripes holiday drive on July 2 and 3. Donors of all blood types, especially those with type B negative or O negative blood are needed to make an appointment to give now to ensure blood remains available for patients this summer.
On Tuesday, July 2 and Wednesday, July 3, the Red Cross will be hosting their 5th annual “Stars and Stripes” Holiday Hero blood drive for two days. The drive will be located at the UAW Local 862 in their Union Hall at 3000 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40213. The hours will be Tuesday, July 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday, July 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
To encourage blood donations, the Red Cross is offering the following to all presenting donors:
· Chicken dinner, courtesy of Broaster
· One free ticket to participating U.S. Cedar Fair parks, including Kings Island, while supplies last
· An exclusive Red Cross umbrella, while supplies last
· Plus, all presenting donors will be entered to win a Big Green Egg grill, thanks to Brownsboro Hardware & Paint, one winner each day! *

Many communities throughout the country have been significantly impacted by one of the most active tornado seasons on record, including Memorial Day weekend’s severe storms and tornadoes that swept through western Kentucky. It’s vital for blood donors to make time in between summer celebrations to give blood or platelets and help ensure lifesaving blood products are ready the moment they are needed in times of disaster or where severe weather may prevent people from being able to donate
How to donate blood
A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
