The American Red Cross continues to support disaster and recovery needs for more than 45 people affected by the 21-unit apartment fire in Mankato, Minn., on June 2. Since then, Red Cross volunteers have been working around the clock to support shelter, food and other relief.
Our primary focus has been sheltering and food operations that started on June 2. At the peak, Red Cross disaster response volunteers were providing shelter relief for more than 25 people. Currently, more than 20 people are staying at the shelter. We’ve provided more than 700 meals.
In addition to shelter and food relief, Red Cross volunteers are working directly with families to help them meet housing needs as well as overall recovery plans. Other disaster relief includes supporting disaster health services (DHS) and disaster mental health (DMH).
“One of the greatest achievements throughout this response has been the collaboration of city, county and community-based organizations,” said Sean Farley-Cowdin, disaster program manager for American Red Cross serving Southwest Minnesota.
Special thanks to Minnesota State University Mankato for providing a safe place for those who have been displaced and being a great response partner. Thank you as well to all the community organizations working together to help people impacted by this disaster.
