The dedication of 12 exceptional volunteers was recently honored by the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada at their annual Volunteer Excellence Awards Ceremony on February 19. Each year, the event celebrates the extraordinary achievements of volunteers who respond to disasters, support military communities, prepare residents for the unexpected, help reconnect families separated by war and natural disasters, and help collect life-saving blood, said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the Utah/Nevada Region.
“The individuals we are recognizing selflessly helped their community beyond expectations,” Ruster announced at the recent virtual event. “All of you, our volunteers, power our mission even in the most challenging environments and times,” she emphasized. “Without you, the Red Cross would not be what it is today, and we truly could not do all we do without you.”
The 12 honorees, along with the more than 600 additional Red Cross volunteers in Southern Nevada, were acknowledged for their commitment to responding during this past year’s destructive wildfire season, supporting disaster relief nationwide, and responding to local home fires – all while navigating the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. In all, 623 Southern Nevada volunteers worked 28,891 hours last year to help those in need.
John Steinbeck, Clark County Fire Chief and Southern Nevada Board Member, gave the opening address: “When we hear on the news that there was a home fire and that the Red Cross was on scene to assist, most in the public don’t take the time to think about what that really means and how your presence brings hope and healing to those who are impacted,” Steinbeck said. “Thank you for the difference you make every day.”
The highest volunteer award given, The Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership, was posthumously bestowed upon Ronald Love for his tireless support of the Southern Nevada Chapter.
