LAS VEGAS (Oct 26, 2023) — Halloween is one of the most exciting holidays for children, but it is also one of the most dangerous nights of the year for kids walking around neighborhoods. To ensure a joyful night of trick-or-treating doesn’t turn tragic, the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada shares crucial safety advice.

The risk of pedestrian fatalities is 43% higher on Halloween compared to any other night, as indicated by research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that sifted through 42 years of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The study also revealed that children between the ages of 4 and 8 are 10 times more likely to be hit by a vehicle on Halloween than on any other evening.

“Trick-or-treaters running from house to house with friends may not be cautious on Halloween,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Southern Nevada Chapter. “As drivers, we must be vigilant and prepared for children who might suddenly run into the street. Especially this year, with Halloween falling on a Tuesday, people will be driving home from work during trick-or-treat time.”

Most childhood pedestrian fatalities occur within residential neighborhoods throughout the year, and especially on Halloween. The riskiest time for trick-or-treaters is between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., when sunset, rush hour and prime trick-or-treating time converge, according to the JAMA research.

Red Cross suggests these Halloween safety measures:

For Drivers:

• Drive Slowly: Anticipate children's excitement and maintain a low speed to avoid accidents.
• Avoid Residential Areas: Unless participating in trick-or-treating, steer clear of subdivisions, particularly between 6-9 pm.
• Switch on Headlights Early: Turn on your headlights at dusk or slightly earlier to enhance visibility.
• Patience at Stops: Allow extra time at stop signs, lights and crosswalks, double-checking before moving.
• Stay Focused: Limit distractions and adhere to speed limits in neighborhoods to ensure pedestrian safety.

For Trick-or-Treaters:

• Walk, Don't Run: A slow and steady pace enables drivers to notice trick-or-treaters.
• Cross Safely: Avoid crossing from behind parked cars. Use crosswalks or stop signs for crossing.
• Use Sidewalks: Stick to sidewalks if available. Otherwise, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
• Be Visible: Use reflective strips, glow sticks or flashlights to enhance visibility.
• Limit Distractions: Minimize phone usage while walking or supervising children.
