LAS VEGAS (July 15, 2023) — As record high temperatures continue across the state, the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada wants to equip pet owners with the information they need to keep their animals safe. The organization is urging residents to take advantage of the free Red Cross Pet First Aid app for useful emergency advice.
“As extreme heat is as dangerous for pets as for people, we want to empower owners with knowledge and user-friendly tools that can help protect beloved companions," said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. "As temperatures soar, pets are vulnerable to heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses. It's crucial for pet owners to understand the signs of distress and take immediate action."
Pet owners can download the Red Cross Pet First Aid app for veterinary advice and to have everyday pet emergency treatments at hand. The app features videos, quizzes, step-by-step advice on pet first aid, and emergency preparedness information. Download the free Red Cross Pet Emergency app available at smartphone app stores, by searching for American Red Cross, or by visiting redcross.org/apps.
Heatstroke: A Common Problem
"Make sure to look for the warning signs of heatstroke in your dog or other pets when playing outside or going for a walk," Flanigan said. "A good rule of thumb is if it feels too hot outside for you to engage in strenuous activity, then your pets are most likely feeling the heat even more intensely."
Know the signs of overheating in pets
The American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) suggest limiting pet exercise on hot days, opting for walks in early morning or evening hours, having pets walk on grass to avoid burning paws, and ensuring they have access to shade and plenty of water. The AVMA also reminds owners to never leave animals in a hot car, even for a few minutes, estimating that hundreds of pets die each year from being left in parked vehicles.
