Central Appalachia Region Home Fire Campaign

The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign helps save lives by installing free smoke alarms in homes that don't have them, and by educating people about home fire safety.

The American Red Cross of Central Appalachia serves Boyd, Carter, Greenup and Lawrence Counties in Kentucky; Allegany, Garrett and Washington Counties in Maryland; Belmont, Gallia, Jackson, Jefferson, Lawrence, Meigs, Monroe, Pike, Scioto and Washington Counties in Ohio; Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah and Warren Counties, and the City of Winchester in Virginia; and all 55 counties in the State of West Virginia.

Home fires claim seven lives every day, but having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half.

That’s why the American Red Cross is rallying volunteers to install free smoke alarms nationwide, as part of our Sound the Alarm events.

This year we’ll install free smoke alarms, create escape plans and share fire safety information.

Stories From People Helped by the Home Fire Campaign

At 11 a.m. on January 2, 2018, a smoke alarm installed by the Red Cross alerted a resident to a home fire enabling her to evacuate herself and her husband safely. The resident stated in an interview, “If it wasn’t for the smoke detectors, we wouldn’t be here for our kids today.” Smoke alarms were installed, a home fire safety checklist and an additional hazard safety checklist on winter weather were reviewed during an in-home visit that was completed on December 14, 2016, by Charles Clegg, who is a Red Cross volunteer and also the resident’s father.
