The New York Giants have joined together with the American Red Cross to help educate and empower bystanders to take action and provide lifesaving care if they are the first on the scene during an emergency.
Each year, more than 300,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time without warning. Delivery of effective CPR and immediate access to an AED (automated external defibrillator) can help prevent fatal outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest. An AED is a device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, advises the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock, known as defibrillation, which helps the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.
On Thursday, March 13, Ethan Medley, Director of Community Relations & Youth Football with the New York Giants, joined the American Red Cross to display one of the two AEDs now available at Newark recreation centers thanks to their support. With him was New York Giants Legend and Super Bowl XLII Champion Rich Seubert. Seubert, who is currently Head Coach at Watchung Hills High School Football, spoke about the importance to have access to lifesaving tools like an AED.
During the event, Recreation Director Donnell Redding welcomed Red Cross Regional CEO Rosie Taravella and Field Operations Manager & Instructor Al Clinton. Al demonstrated how to use an AED during an emergency, as well as how to perform Hands-Only CPR, to the audience at the JFK Recreation Center in Newark.
Thanks to support from the New York Giants, more than 250 people have learned Hands-Only CPR across New Jersey and two AEDs have been placed in Newark recreation centers – one at JFK Recreation Center and the other at Boylan Street Recreation Center.
“We are grateful to the New York Giants for their generous support to help make New Jersey communities safer,” said Taravella. “The Red Cross encourages everyone to learn first aid, CPR and how to use an AED, so they’ll have the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency and help save lives.”
