On November 16, 2023, Tianna Gierstorf and Baudilio Diaz were honored for their lifesaving actions on August 11, 2023. The two American Red Cross-certified lifeguards saved a child and exemplified the mission of the Red Cross – to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.  

While working at Kingston Resorts, Tianna and Baudilio rushed into action, working together to rescue and perform CPR on a 3-year-old boy they discovered drowning in the pool. 

“You just jump—you don’t have time to think. You just do it,” said Baudilio, recalling how his training enabled him to act. “It made me feel great because we saved a life.”  

While neither expected to have to use CPR on the job, Tianna and Baudilio credited the water safety training they received with giving them the skills and confidence they needed to respond in an emergency.

“Be aware of your surroundings [while at the pool],” Tianna reminds swimmers and guardians. “There are lots of people around, but few pay attention.” 

Tianna and Baudilio were honored with American Red Cross Lifesaving Awards for Professional Responders at a ceremony in Myrtle Beach. This prestigious award is presented to individuals or team of individuals who save or sustain a life by using skills and knowledge learned in an American Red Cross Training Services course.    

“Be attentive, careful, and prepared when you or your family is around a body of water,” said Baudilio. “If you see someone struggling, act!”
