DALLAS–FORT WORTH — As Tropical Storms Laura and Marco hit the Gulf Coast beginning today, the American Red Cross has pre-positioned relief supplies, and more than 400 trained disaster workers are standing by to provide emergency shelter to those in need. The Red Cross is coordinating closely with community partners and emergency officials to be ready to provide aid.
More than 10 Red Cross North Texas workers are currently supporting response efforts in advance of the storm. We anticipate more disaster workers to be requested in the coming days. Additional support is being provided virtually to assist in casework, logistics, data entry, disaster mental health and more.
To help keep people safe, the Red Cross is following guidance from the CDC and public health authorities and have put in place addition precautions including face coverings, health screenings, and opening more shelters that will house fewer people than normal, so that our special social distancing protocols can be maintained.
Tropical Storm Marco is predicted to make landfall along the Louisiana coast later today through Tuesday.. While the storm is weakening, it could still bring almost 60 mph winds, up to 10 inches of rain in some areas, and a dangerous storm surge with could cause coastal flooding. Starting Wednesday, Laura could produce up to 15 inches of rain in some areas newar the Texas and Louisiana border north into the Mississippi Valley.
