It takes dedication to stay in the same place for over 50 years. Joseph Misek has been a volunteer with the Red Cross for 52 years. Loving people and community is what has kept Joseph volunteering for so long.
Joseph has had many roles through the years, from first aid instructor to helping build an American Red Cross first aid van. He has spent countless hours training, keeping up on all and any knowledge that could be helpful in an emergency.
“I worked very close with Paris EMS and have been setting up first aid stations for over ten years,” Joseph said.
Overseeing Red Cross first aid and safety services made him vital to Paris, Texas. Joseph has helped the community overcome floods, tornadoes and more. But he also takes time to attend events like art shows, the Tour de Paris bicycle rally and hot air balloon rises. He gives back to the community in any way he can.
Joseph and his contagious charisma are there when people need him. His commitment and dedication have helped him recruit many more volunteers simply by asking for help. He has built meaningful relationships that keep his community close.
Being a volunteer for over 50 years, Joseph has seen much change. He went from teaching Red Cross handbooks to leading online learning courses. Change is inevitable, but he adapted to the different needs of the community and how he helped. During Joseph’s tenure, his desire to be there for people and his community stayed steady.
“We still serve the community by being available for family burnouts, shelters, wherever else is needed,” Joseph said.
