June 1-7 is designated as National CPR and AED Awareness Week. Along with other National Cardiac Arrest Collaborative members, the American Red Cross is stressing that every second counts in cardiac arrest and that people can save lives by knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED.
Did you know that sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in this country and that most cardiac arrests happen at home? Would you know what to do if someone needed help?
Every year the Red Cross trains millions of people in CPR and how to use an AED. A variety of online, blended (online content with in-class skills session) and instructor-led classroom training offerings are available. Red Cross training and certification meets the needs of workplace responders, professional rescuers, school staff and healthcare providers as well as the general public. Several courses are OSHA compliant. Check with your employer as to what class you need if you are taking training to fulfill a job requirement.
Those taking hands-on training will benefit from practicing skills on the new state of the art BigRed™ LightSaving Manikin. The manikin will increase students’ confidence that they can save a life in emergency situations, as it’s equipped with three interrelated sets of lights that provide immediate feedback to students on how they are performing CPR. Only the proper technique will show the success of blood circulating from the heart to the brain which improves a sudden cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
You'll find additional information and can enter your zip code to find training in your area by going to the CPR and AED training section of our website, or if you are a business or organization, you can get your employees trained in CPR and AED. The Red Cross can help you or your organization with facilitating the purchase of an AED, accessories, and service and maintenance plans.
The free Red Cross First Aid App provides users with instant access to information on heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest, performing Hands-Only CPR and other emergencies.
