May is National Nurses Month and during this time, the American Red Cross recognizes the valuable contributions of our Red Cross nurses, who help bring our mission to life every day. This year’s theme, “Nurses Make the Difference,” highlights the spirit of compassion and care that nurses embody every day.
Red Cross nurses work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to provide compassionate care, comfort, and healing to families affected by disasters, big and small. During National Nurses Month, we have the privilege to honor these remarkable individuals who make a profound difference in the lives of many.
“Our role as nurses in the Red Cross is to establish the pre-disaster healthcare needs of [those affected]” and to make sure they get the same level of need filled after a disaster, said Maria Gubnitsky, a registered nurse and the Integrated Care Condolence Team (ICCT) Coordinator for the South Florida Region.
“We fill that gap, meeting the disaster-related needs…we serve as the liaison. [They] may be overwhelmed, they may have lost everything.”
The Red Cross does not provide medical care. However, in a disaster, if someone loses prescription medication or medical equipment such as hearing aids or prescription eyeglasses – Red Cross nurses can help find a replacement.
“If you lose it in a fire, we’re going to make sure you have it as soon as possible,” Maria said.
Maria began volunteering with the Red Cross in 2017 and since then, has deployed or assisted with over 20 disaster relief operations from hurricanes, wildfires, floods and mass casualty events. Most recently, Maria deployed to Hawaii after the Maui wildfires and said of her experience, “I was in awe and proud to be part of this Red Cross team, serving to fulfill the mission and allowing me to provide client-facing nursing care, [it was] a truly rewarding experience.”
Nurses quietly make a difference in the lives of those they serve. Their impact extends far beyond medical charts and prescriptions. They celebrate victories, console during losses, and provide emotional support. Their presence brings comfort to families, especially during challenging times.
As we recognize these dedicated professionals like Maria, let us express our heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering commitment and selfless service.
In conclusion, let us celebrate our nurses not only during National Nurses Week but every day. Their dedication, compassion, and resilience inspire us all. To our nurses: Thank you for being our everyday heroes!
