Every 8 minutes, the Red Cross responds to a disaster in the community. This effort requires thousands of generous volunteers to put their “boots on the ground” to ensure that our services reach those who need us.
If you’re an action-oriented person who can adapt to changing situations and can be flexible about when and where you’ll be working, a “Boots on the Ground” position may be ideal for you. These positions may require you to work irregular hours on short notice, do physical labor, and/or serve in communities under strain from a natural disaster or other emergency. Please note that some “Boots on the Ground” positions involve working directly with people affected by disaster, which can be deeply rewarding but emotionally stressful.
Depending on position, work location may be at a Red Cross facility but is more likely to be out in your local community. Experienced “Boots” volunteers may be asked to travel during large disaster relief operations.
Time commitments vary by position and by your availability but we typically request at least one shift per month. Some positions have physical requirements, such as the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
All necessary training will be provided.
The rewarding part is just to see that you’re actually helping somebody, and they appreciate it. That means a lot to me … that’s my reward.
